A film set

T

rains, since they first appeared on film in 1895 in the Lumière brothers’ Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat, have evolved on screen as an element related to passion, disillusion, murder, treachery and farewells. In films featuring railway atmospheres, stations are the meeting place where people from all social backgrounds gather together and, in general, represent the ideal setting for depicting the joy of encounters and the sadness of separations.

In Madrid, train stations have served as the film set for many Spanish and foreign productions, and a large amount of films have been (and are still) made in Delicias Station, which is often depicted as a foreign terminal.

The following are some of the more than thirty films that have been shot in Delicias: Life on a Thread (1945), Edgar Neville; The Violet Seller (1958), Luis César Amadori; My Wedding Night (1961), Tulio Demicheli; Doctor Zhivago (1965), David Lean; Eagles Over London (1969), Enzo G. Castellari; Nicholas and Alexandra (1971), Franklin J. Schaffner; Santa Olaja de acero (1971), José Antonio Páramo; Travels with My Aunt (1972), Georges Cukor; Horror Express (1973), Eugenio Martín; Torment (1974), Pedro Olea; March or Die (1977), Dick Richards; Reds (1981), Warren Beatty; Las cosas del querer (1989), Jaime Chávarri; Lovers (1991), Vicente Aranda; Love Can Seriously Damage Your Health (1996), Manuel Gómez Pereira; Camarón (2005), Jaime Chávarri; Un franco, 14 pesetas (2006), Carlos Iglesias; Luna caliente (2010), Vicente Aranda; Paper Birds (2010), Emilio Aragón; Holmes & Watson. Madrid Days (2012), José Luis Garci…
